In summer 2026 the Sonic Pluriverse Festival at Haus der Kulturen der Welt devoted five weeks to Global Echoes of Gnawa: concerts, films, panels, workshops and a true lila, the night-long ceremony, from 23:00 until 05:00. It opened with a Gnawa parade from Tiergarten to the House of World Cultures, led by Maâlem Hicham Bilali and Black Koyo, and Gnawa Berlin walked in it. More in the history of Gnawa.

What to expect at a Gnawa concert

Three sounds carry almost everything: the guembri, a three-stringed bass lute played by the maâlem; the qraqeb, heavy iron castanets; and the tbel, a drum for the street.
